There are three kinds of people who look for salary information:

  1. Who have got an offer and want to evaluate it against the salaries paid at the organization for similar levels
  2. Who are contemplating a move and trying to find out who pays the best before hitting the apply button
  3. Who periodically scan salary information to understand their current worth and pitch it against the ever-changing job market

No matter which category you belong to, getting hold of legitimate information regarding salary figures is more like going down the rabbit hole. There’s either too much information or none at all. And even if you do get some clue, how do you verify its credibility?

In this article, let me introduce you to five websites that offer salary information, and how you can use them to seal your next big offer.

Disclaimer: The data in all these websites is crowdsourced. It means that it is based on the salary information provided by real people. Some people might have entered ridiculously high or low values, but these websites do their best to filter out or average such figures.

5. PayScale

PayScale helps employers and their employees understand the right pay for every position and effectively communicate about compensation. It has an extensive list of salary information for companies categorized by their job sector.

Keep in mind, however, that most of this information can be very old and inaccurate as of today.

4. Glassdoor

Glassdoor is one of the world’s largest job and recruiting sites. This means they are also one of the world’s largest database of salary information.

Apart from salary information, Glassdoor is also a great place to read about the interview experience and reviews about companies. Make sure you do extensive research on Glassdoor before making the move.

3. LinkedIn

LinkedIn started with a mission to connect the world’s professional and serve as your online resume. Over the time, it has turned into a great social networking site to connect with like-minded professionals and discover opportunities.

A great but often underutilized feature of LinkedIn is their salary insights. You need to enter your own salary to be able to access it (which is fair TBH), so it might not cater completely to students.

2. LeetCode

LeetCode is the de facto competitive coding platform whether it is about honing your coding skills or preparing for your next job interview.

The compensation section in LeetCode is a hidden gem that provides real and updated details from community users who benefited from LeetCode and bagged their dream job.

Apart from this, users also share their interview experiences which is a great repository to understand the current questions being asked in companies.

1. Levels.fyi

This is my personal favorite and something that I recommend to “everyone”. While not entirely a salary comparison site, Levels.fyi has the most comprehensive list of job levels in technology companies around the world. You can use it to compare the designation at your next job with your current one, as well with other tech giants.

The salaries available here are in USD since the data mostly flows from engineers in the valley. You may need to do a currency conversion for your location to get the correct picture.
